Mark Twain may have referred to it as a “dismal little river town” but for those looking to have a terrifying ghostly experience Alton, Illinois is anything but dismal.
This small town on the Mississippi River is known as the most haunted small town in the U.S.A. and with good reason. From paranormal activities, to ghost sightings and a general feeling of eeriness, Alton is a great place to visit for Halloween if you’re looking for something authentically spooky.
One of the most haunted places in the Alton is McPike Mansion. Resembling something out of a Stephen King novel, McPike was featured in the series
Scariest Places on Earth. Built by Henry Guest McPike the mansion stood empty from the 1950’s until a couple, who had no idea the property was haunted, scooped it up for a great price. Since then visitors report seeing numerous ghosts, including that of Henry McPike, balls of light, orbs and strange figures in photographs.
According to
VisitAlton.com, the small town’s church is haunted by a past Reverend and the old school is reportedly visited by a former student, Mary, who was found dead in the gymnasium. Visitors also report hearing footsteps in the corridor and before the school closed office staff often found items missing from their desks.
Visitors to Alton can participate in numerous ghost tours that take in other haunted parts of the town, including the city cemetery, the confederate cemetery, and the Mineral Springs Mall.
