Less than a week after announcing the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games would be postponed due to the coronavirus, organizers have announced when the games will take place.
According to
USA Today Sports, the organizers have pushed the games back for one whole year, settling on a start date of July 23, 2021. The closing ceremony will take place on August 8, 2021.
“These new dates give the health authorities and all involved in the organisation of the Games the maximum time to deal with the constantly changing landscape and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the IOC said in a press release.
The Tokyo Paralympics have been rescheduled to August 24 – September 5, 2021.
