In an interview with
Yahoo Lifestyle, Meredith Vieira’s husband, Richard Cohen, revealed the first time he knew he had multiple sclerosis.
Although Cohen’s family has a strong history of MS (both his mother and father had it), he shared with
Yahoo Lifestyle he was in “denial” about having the disease, despite showing some symptoms.
At the age of 25, Cohen was diagnosed with MS. Dropping a coffee pot was one of his first signs.
“I dropped a coffee pot for no reason. I fell off a curb for no reason. I noticed a little numbness in my leg,” Cohen revealed. “It hit my eyesight fairly quickly, but other than that, I was very active physically and I thought I was really beating it. I was living in denial.”
It’s a disease actress Selma Blair was diagnosed with last summer after experiencing undiagnosed symptoms for years.
Earlier this month Blair shared a throwback picture detailing what she says was one of the first multiple sclerosis flairs she experienced, although at the time she didn’t know she had the disease.
“A beautiful summer night in Miami,” Blair captioned the throwback photo. “My flare was already hitting. I didn’t know what was happening. But I sat outside and had a gorgeous dinner with my dear friend. All we have is right now. This. Is the past. But I remember knowing to just feel the warmth in the breeze. The gift of this trip. Under the table my leg was dead. I couldn’t stay awake and my right hand couldn’t find my mouth.”
Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system, which affects how the body and brain communicate. Symptoms can include tingling, nerve pain, weakness, fatigue, vision problems, and difficulty walking.
