YouTube sensation JoJo Siwa has confirmed she is part of the LGBTQ community after coming out on Instagram. The 17-year-old dancer addressed rumors surrounding her sexuality just days after posting a picture of herself wearing a t-shirt that read “Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever” via Instagram Live.
“For the last 48 hours, I have gotten the most endless amount of love and support,” Siwa told fans. “And now that the world gets to see this side of my life, it makes me really happy.”
“Of course, people are going to say it’s not normal, but nothing is normal,” the former Dance Moms student said regarding the stigma that sometimes surrounds coming out. “Literally not one thing about anybody is normal and it’s okay not to be normal, it’s okay to be a little different, it’s okay to be a little strange…That’s something we should never, ever be afraid of. That’s something we should be proud of.”
While Siwa told fans she’s not ready to put a label on herself yet, she did confirm her parents have been very supportive of her and that her mom has known “for the last two years.”
“Around two years ago, she was like, ‘I don’t think you only like boys, and that’s totally ok.’”
Siwa’s announcement has drawn support from other celebs, including Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller who shared several throwback photos of herself and Siwa.
“I always knew the world would be a more colorful, positive, sparkly place with a kind, loving, dazzling triple threat like you in it,” Miller captioned a series of throwback shots. “A shining example for the kids out there to live their BEST lives each and every day…Keep making me proud.”
