Actress and LGBTQ activist Laverne Cox is getting a Barbie Doll in her likeness!
According to
USA Today, Mattel announced it would be creating a Barbie Doll modeled after Cox, marking the first time the doll has been created in the likeness of a transgender woman.
“It’s been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my own doll,” said Cox in a statement reported by
USA Today. “I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection.”
Mattel worked closely with Cox to create a Barbie Doll that fit the
Orange in the New Black actress’ signature style.
The doll comes complete with a red tulle gown, worn over a sparkling silver metallic bodysuit – and, of course, Barbie is sporting Cox’s signature blonde, wavy hair.
“I hope that people can look at this Barbie and dream big like I have in my career,” Cox revealed. “The space of dreaming and manifesting is such a powerful source and leads you to achieve more than what you originally thought was possible.”
“We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate award-winning actress, producer, writer and LGBTQ+ rights trailblazer Laverne Cox with a doll,” Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and global head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel, said in a statement reported by
Good Morning America. “We are proud to highlight the importance of inclusion and acceptance at every age and to recognize Laverne’s significant impact on culture with a Tribute Collection Barbie.”
