In a newly released clip from Jay-Z’s interview on
My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, the rapper opened up to host David Letterman about the moment his mother, Gloria Carter, came out to him.
Jay-Z’s mom opened up to her son just eight months ago, telling him she felt like she was in love with her partner.
“I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free,” Jay-Z revealed. “Imagine having to live your life as someone else and you think you’re protecting your kids. For my mother to have to live as someone she wasn’t and hide and protect her kids and didn’t want to embarrass her kids for all this time and for her to sit in front of me and tell me I think I love someone.”
The next day Jay-Z told Letterman he sat down and wrote “Smile” for his latest album
4:44 in which he raps about “living two lives.”
While Jay-Z felt he always knew his mother was gay, they had never sat down and talked about her sexuality until that day.
Jay-Z’s full interview with David Letterman premieres April 6 on Netflix.
