Alec Baldwin has announced he will be taking a break from Twitter following the scandal over his wife’s heritage last month.
In a tweet posted Monday, the
Saturday Night Live star told fans, “Twitter is like a party where everyone is screaming. Not much of a party. Goodbye for now.”
Baldwin’s break from social media comes after his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, was accused of lying about her Spanish heritage and faking her accent.
Last month Hilaria addressed the uproar about her heritage on Instagram, telling fans, “I was born in Boston and grew up spending time with my family between Massachusetts and Spain. My parents and sibling live in Spain and I chose to live here, in the USA,” the yoga instructor clarified via Instagram on December 27, 2020. “We celebrate both cultures in our home — Alec and I are raising our children bilingual, just as I was raised. This is very important to me. I understand that my story is a little different, but it is mine, and I’m very proud of it.”
In a subsequent interview with the
New York Times, Hilaria addressed the allegations of cultural misappropriation, saying, “Who is to say what you’re allowed to absorb and not absorb growing up… I can’t make it go away just because some people don’t understand it.”
This isn’t the first time Alec Baldwin has stepped away from Twitter. According to
CNN, the actor has done it a few times, including in 2017 after comments he made about the sexual harassment and assault at the beginning of the #MeToo movement sparked outrage.
