Fans took to social media to congratulate Atlanta native Gladys Knight after she kicked off what was an otherwise pretty dull Super Bowl with her rousing rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” complete with F-16 Fighting Falcons soaring overhead.
Gladys Knight looked and sounded like she actually descended from heaven to midfield to sing the anthem. #Lordhavemercy #SuperBowl

The 74-year-old belted out the anthem wearing a gorgeous Michael Kors white dress from their Resort 2019 collection, paired with silver ankle boots.
Addressing the controversy surrounding the Super Bowl and her decision to sing the National Anthem, Knight told ET prior to her performance, “ Atlanta is my home. My background. My family that lifted me up.”
“This is my country. This is my state, my city and I love my country. It’s really as simple as that,” Knight shared with ET. “I choose all my songs by what they say, or what they would make me [feel]… I think about the people that fought, and marched, and died, and did all those things for our country. I’m proud to just honor them by singing that anthem.”
