The contestants were narrowed down to two finalists, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines and Ariadna Gutierrez of Colombia. When it came time for Harvey to announce the winner, he made the mistake of crowning Miss Colombia the winner, when in actuality, she was first runner-up. Source: Steve Marcus/Reuters
After Miss Colombia was announced the winner, she was awarded a bouquet of flowers and the crown as she waved to her fans in the audience. A few moments passed before Harvey addressed the crowd in Las Vegas, stating, “OK folks … I have to apologize,” appearing mortified. He continued, “Let me just take control of this. This is exactly what’s on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card.” Source: Steve Marcus/Reuters
It was time for Miss Philippines to have her moment. Although excited to learn she was the actual winner, the confusion was apparent. Both finalists appeared dumbfounded as they stood on stage. The crown was removed from Miss Colombia and placed onto the head of Miss Philippines.
Harvey has since fired off a series of apologetic Tweets. He began, “I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible.” He added, “Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake.” He ended his series of Tweets stating, “I don’t want to take away from this amazing night and pageant. As well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing.”
Oh the beauty of live television!
